Warwickshire Shine During a Dramatic Summer County Week

Warwickshire’s men came within a few points of winning the prestigious Summer County Week Group 1 title, while the women secured their place in Group 3 after a week filled with close matches, impressive victories and outstanding individual performances.

The men finished runners-up in the elite Group 1 at Eastbourne for the second consecutive year, despite beginning the competition with the relatively modest aim of retaining their place in the division.

Captain Gavin Henderson’s side opened with the narrowest of 5-4 defeats against Middlesex, with four of the nine rubbers decided by Championship tiebreaks. However, the team responded superbly and went on to record three consecutive victories.

A hard-fought 6-3 win over Cambridgeshire was followed by an emphatic 8-1 victory against Northamptonshire, which guaranteed Warwickshire’s survival in the top division.

Former British junior champion Luca Pow and Coventry’s Jake Hersey formed an outstanding partnership throughout the week, while Mason Recci, Max Stewart, Oliver Plaskett and Alex Griffiths all contributed important victories.

The team’s most memorable performance came against East of Scotland, when Warwickshire produced a sensational 6-3 win to remain in contention for the title.

With the match level at three rubbers each, Henderson brought rising Warwick player Ferran Redza and Coventry coach Richard Partridge into the final round to face the highly rated Scottish first pair.

Unfazed by their opponents’ reputations, Redza and Partridge produced one of the performances of the week. They took the opening set 6-4 before holding their nerve to win the deciding Championship tiebreak, sparking huge celebrations among the Warwickshire players and supporters.

Warwickshire won all three final-round rubbers to complete their third “Three after Tea” of the week and set up a final-day title showdown against reigning champions Surrey.

The Bears led Surrey 2-1 following the opening round, but fell 4-2 behind before mounting a superb late fightback. Pow and Hersey won in straight sets, while Partridge and Plaskett survived a deciding tiebreak to level the match at four rubbers apiece.

That left the entire Group 1 title resting on the final match. Redza and Stewart recovered from a set down against Surrey’s top partnership but were eventually edged out 10-7 in the Championship tiebreak.

Surrey retained the title with a 5-4 victory, but Warwickshire could take enormous pride from finishing runners-up in one of the strongest divisions in county tennis.

“We’ve had an amazing week,” said Henderson. “To come so close to taking the title was astounding.

“Every player contributed and played their heart out, often winning crucial matches against higher-rated opposition. On this form, I really feel we are capable of going one better and taking the title next year.”

Women Secure Group 3 Status

Warwickshire’s women also experienced a week of incredibly fine margins at Raynes Park, eventually finishing fourth in Group 3 and safely avoiding relegation.

Captain Lianne Candappa’s side began strongly, defeating Berkshire 5-4 before recording an impressive 6-3 victory over Derbyshire.

The team included several talented teenagers making their County Week debuts, alongside more experienced county players. Lucia Cassidy and Summer Yardley won all three of their rubbers against Derbyshire, while Holly Reid and Giorgie Jones also combined effectively to secure two straight-sets victories.

Tanishka Naveen, aged 15, marked her County Week debut with an impressive win alongside the experienced Lucie Butler.

The team suffered an agonising 5-4 defeat against Leicestershire on Day 3, with four rubbers decided by Championship tiebreaks. Warwickshire won just one of those deciding tiebreaks, demonstrating how little separated the two teams.

Despite missing several leading players because of injury, absence and tournament commitments, the women continued to compete strongly. Teenagers Naveen, Shennai Chahal, Ellie Buttimore and Tess Beard all gained valuable experience against established county opposition.

Following a 7-2 defeat against a strong Hampshire and Isle of Wight side, Warwickshire needed a positive result against East of Scotland on the final day.
