How to be considered for selection

Selection for County Training is based on a fair and transparent process that considers a wide range of factors. While results are important, we understand that player development is multi-dimensional, and we look at the broader picture.

Key Factors Considered

  • Competition Involvement: Players should be actively competing in LTA tournaments throughout the year.

  • Improvement Over Time: Coaches consider a player's progression, work ethic and willingness to learn — not just isolated match results.

  • Commitment: Players who regularly attend training, show effort, demonstrate strong attitude and engage in county activities are more likely to be selected.

  • Behaviour & Values: We expect players to demonstrate Fair Play, good sportsmanship, teamwork and respect — both on and off the court.

  • Coach Insight: Recommendations from club coaches or county coaches help us understand each player’s pathway, potential and current level of readiness.

Term-by-Term Selection

Selection takes place twice per year — once for the September–February term and once again for the March–July term.
Being selected for one term does not automatically guarantee selection for the next, as we want to give opportunities to players who have made progress or shown new promise.

This approach helps ensure fairness and allows players to grow, develop and strive towards selection throughout the season.

Playing Up Policy

In the younger age groups (8U–10U), we occasionally identify players who are ready for a greater challenge and the opportunity to play at a higher age group.

A maximum of two players may be invited to train or compete one age group above their own if:

  • They display maturity and capability beyond their current group

  • They are physically and emotionally ready for the step up

  • It is considered beneficial for their long-term development

This is always done in the best interest of the player and is reviewed carefully by the coaching team.

Player Pathway Stages

Every player is different, but the pathway provides a clear and meaningful progression route that supports long-term development.

8U – Building the Basics

Players learn the fundamental skills of tennis in a fun, supportive environment. Coordination, movement and basic rally skills are priority areas, and early competition experiences help build confidence.

9U–10U – Establishing Foundations

At this stage, players begin to develop consistency, tactical awareness and an understanding of teamwork. They are introduced to more structured training and matches as they grow their confidence and competitiveness.

11U–12U – Developing Performance Skills

These years focus on strengthening the technical and tactical elements of the game. Players begin to face stronger competition, increase their physical capability and improve their match management.

14U – Preparing for Higher Competition

Players at this level begin facing more advanced physical and strategic demands. Training emphasises decision-making, style of play, fitness and handling competitive pressure.

18U – Pathway to Senior Tennis

This is the bridging stage between junior and adult competition. Players refine their game, prepare for regional or national opportunities and develop maturity both on and off the court. They are encouraged to build strong leadership skills and support younger age groups as role models.

A Pathway That Supports Every Player

The Warwickshire Player Pathway aims to give every athlete a clear sense of direction, purpose and opportunity. Whether a player is beginning their journey at 8U or pushing for senior county selection at 18U, the pathway ensures they receive the right challenges and support at the right time.

We believe in recognising potential, supporting long-term development and giving every player the opportunity to thrive within the Warwickshire Tennis community.
