Warwickshire Ladies 60s opened their summer Seniors County Cup campaign in impressive fashion with a 3-1 victory over Cornwall in their Division 3A fixture at the University of Warwick Tennis Centre.

Representing the home county were two well-established doubles partnerships. Captain Kate Perkins and Mel Jennings (Kenilworth) faced Cornwall's first pair, Sallyann Homer and Judith Ward, in a closely contested encounter. After taking the first set 6-3 and moving ahead 5-3 in the second, the Warwickshire duo were unable to close out the match in straight sets. However, they regrouped superbly to secure victory in the championship tie-break.

On the neighbouring court, Sandra Jepson and Chris Scott (Beechwood) produced a commanding performance against Tina Lucas and Helena Luke, recording a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win to give Warwickshire a strong start.

Following the change of opponents, Perkins and Jennings continued their excellent form, defeating Cornwall's second pair 6-1, 6-3. Jepson and Scott battled hard against Cornwall's top pairing but were unable to add a fourth point, going down 6-2, 6-3.

The result gives Warwickshire a positive start to their County Cup campaign, with the team now looking ahead to an away fixture against Berkshire on 27 June. Further matches against Somerset and Wiltshire will follow later in the summer.

Team spirit is high after a series of enjoyable practice sessions shared with friends from the Warwickshire 55s squad. The team would also like to thank captain Kate Perkins for organising the new 60s squad and for providing excellent refreshments throughout the day.
