Warwickshire recently took part in the Over 40s County Padel Championships, competing

against strong county sides in a highly competitive and well-organised event.

The Warwickshire team was captained by James Southwood and featured Nathan Rooney,

Stuart Maidment, Tony Ecclestone, John Branch, and Ian Poole. The squad represented

the county with commitment, teamwork, and excellent sportsmanship throughout the

weekend.

Warwickshire’s opening match was against Avon, a side with excellent strength in depth. In

the first pair, James Southwood and Nathan Rooney delivered an outstanding performance,

winning convincingly 6–3, 6–0. The second pair, Stuart Maidment and John Branch, were

involved in a tight and competitive encounter but narrowly lost 7–5, 6–3. With the tie level at

one match apiece, James Southwood and Stuart Maidment teamed up for the deciding

shoot-out and won convincingly to secure the overall victory for Warwickshire.

The second match saw Warwickshire face Yorkshire, the previous runners-up and a team full

of internationally experienced players. In a high-quality contest, James Southwood and

Nathan Rooney battled back superbly to win 5–7, 7–5, 10–6 in the match tie-break. The

second pair, Stuart Maidment and John Branch, faced extremely strong opposition and

lost 6–0, 6–1. With the tie finishing one match all, it again went to a shoot-out, where

Warwickshire narrowly missed out against a formidable Yorkshire side.

In the final group match, Warwickshire played Berkshire. This proved to be the most

comfortable of the fixtures, with both Warwickshire pairs winning their matches

convincingly to complete a strong set of results in the group stages.

Overall, it was a great weekend for Warwickshire seniors padel, with the team winning

two matches and competing hard in every tie. The championships provided excellent

exposure to a high level of competition and highlighted the strength and depth of padel within the county.

Many thanks to Warwickshire Tennis for their organisation and continued support in making

this event possible.
