The 8U Warwickshire County Cup took place this past weekend, bringing together young players from across the region to compete in what was a fantastic display of teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship. As a county, we were proud to host the 8U County Cup event for a second year in a row at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, with tremendous support from Kathryn Heathcote as our referee.
This year, we were joined by teams from Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire. Sadly, Staffordshire wasn’t able to make the event, but this gave us the opportunity to enter a second team in both the boys’ and girls’ events. Having two teams in each event not only added to the excitement but also allowed more of our players to get their first introduction to county competition — an experience that will stay with them throughout their county journeys.
Boys’ Event
The boys’ competition saw some brilliant matchplay across the day, with Warwickshire A leading the charge from the very start. Every player stepped up to the challenge, and it was fantastic to see them putting into practice the skills and tactics developed over the past months.
The boys’ event turned out to be a very close battle, with the overall standings coming down to a shoot-out tiebreak between Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire — a match that would ultimately decide the final placings. Oxfordshire won the tiebreak, but Warwickshire A’s earlier win over Oxfordshire proved to be the deciding factor, securing overall victory for Warwickshire on a head-to-head basis. A standout performance came from our number one and number four players, who won all their singles matches, playing a crucial role in Warwickshire A’s success.
Meanwhile, Warwickshire B put up an impressive display, fighting hard in every match. Although they didn’t quite make the top spot, they cemented their place in third. This was no small feat, and their performance demonstrated growth, teamwork, and resilience. Each player in the B team gave it their all, and their positive attitude and competitive spirit played a huge role in keeping the energy high throughout the day. The experience gained from this event will be invaluable as they continue to develop in their tennis journeys, and they should be incredibly proud of how they represented Warwickshire.
Girls’ Event
The girls’ competition started strong, with a high-level match between the number one players from Warwickshire and Oxfordshire setting the tone for the A and B teams. The A team came through that tough battle against Oxfordshire and grew stronger as the day went on, eventually securing the victory in the girls’ event. Meanwhile, the B team had an impressive victory against Northamptonshire, and their strong performances throughout the day earned them a well-deserved third-place finish.
We were fortunate to have 10 players available on the day, and proudly, some of our players stepped in to help Northamptonshire, who were short one player. Some of our players even played against us, showing great sportsmanship and team spirit. The final standings in the girls’ event were clearer compared to the boys’ event, but the competitive spirit and strong performances from all players were evident throughout the day.
