Captains Report

Day one v Oxfordshire

After a late night from travelling and waiting for dinner, Warwickshire girls were in good spirits going into the weekend. After a few hours wait, Frankie and Aanya were first on at no3&4 singles against their respective number. Inevitably nerves played a part in the start of the match. Both girls went a set down but fought their way into the game, completing the comeback winning in a championship tie break (CT). 2-0 Warwickshire.

Freya and Tandie were next on against Oxfordshire’s 1&2. Freya played with confidence against higher ranked opponent and remained in control throughout beating her opponent in straight sets.  Tandie wasted no time in her match losing just two games to leave the fixture unassailable for Oxfordshire,  after the singles. Freya and Tandie partnered up to win a convincing match against the first pair. Violet and Aanya found their rhythm after the first set and closed out the match in a tiebreak. A  brilliant 6-0 win against Oxfordshire.

Day 1/2 v Hertfordshire

The girls were straight on against Hertfordshire where Violet and Aanya took to the court at no4&3 singles respectively.

Violet stormed ahead taking the first set 4-0. Violet continued her form in the second set but the other girl played some inspirational tennis cheered on by a crowd behind. Violet never let this get to her and maintained composed to close out the match in a second set tie break. Aanya had a tough opponent and played some great tennis but didn’t quite have enough to beat her big hitting opponent on this occasion. 1-1 against Herts before fixtures came to a halt for the day.

The next day started with Tandie and Freya playing against no. 2&1 in the singles order. With Freya’s opponent having lost to the player she beat the day before there was great belief going into it. Tandie played some great tennis and was unfortunate to not get anything out of the first set. Both girls gave up a good battle but eventually came out second place.

3-1 down after the singles meant both doubles were needed. Frankie and Tandie took on the no2 doubles pair and battled their way through a tough match. A fantastic result to leave the tie 3-2 down. Freya and Aanya competed valiantly to a very strong Hertfordshire pair losing out in straight sets.

A tough loss for the girls which could have gone either way.

Day 2- v Cambridgeshire

Warwickshire finishing second in their group were due to play Cambridgeshire who also narrowly missed out on a first placed finish in their group. On paper this match was always going to be a challenge with Cambridgeshire girls all ranked in the top 50 nationally. The singles were won by Cambs in straight sets but undeterred were Freya and Violet that took on arguably the best doubles pair (ranking 20&25 nationally) of the tournament. The girls were unfazed by the attacking play of the girls. Violet came up with all the answers at the net and more whilst Freya mixed things up well from the baseline. They kept believing, laughed off the tense glares from the other side of the net and enjoyed themselves by delight of the spectators. An inspiring finish to the tournament and a lesson to us all how doubles should be played.

Well done to all the girls this weekend. They competed incredibly hard. Played with composure beyond their years and made myself, Ben and the rest of Warwickshire immensely proud. I look forward to watching their progress in the coming year/s.
